Alexandra David Neel & Her Enlightenment in Sikkim

Alexandra David Neel was a French Lady who visited Sikkim in the year 1912. During the next 2 years she met with the Gomchen of Lachen ( Rimpoche) and learnt the art of telepathy from him. She also attempted “tumo” breathing, the Tibetan art of generating body heat to keep warm in freezing conditions.

We have prepared an itinerary in which we take you to the very Cave where Alexandra David Neel went in Meditation for months. We can even have an audience with the present Gomchen of Lachen ( Rimpoche), if he is stationed at Lachen.

ABOUT ALEXANDRA DAVID NEEL
Alexandra David Neel was born in Paris on 24th October 1868. In the year 1891 she traveled for more than a year in Ceylon and India. In 1911 she undertook her second voyage to India and arrived in Pondicherry. By 1912 she was living in Calcutta.

When she arrived in the small Himalayan state of Sikkim in 1912, she immediately felt at home, and increased her knowledge of Buddhism by visiting all important monasteries there and she also met the Prince Sidkeong of Sikkim. She made great progress in Tibetan language and met the Gomchen (great hermit) of Lachen monastery in North Sikkim. He was an impressive figure wearing the five sided crown, rosary necklace of 108 pieces of human skull, an apron carved of human bone, and a magic dagger. During the next 2 years she met with the Gomchen of Lachen and learnt the art of telepathy from him. She also attempted “tumo” breathing, the Tibetan art of generating body heat to keep warm in freezing conditions.

Two years later she met a young man called Aphur Yongden, and a friendship which was to last a life time, he eventually became her adopted son. They both moved to cave hermitage in Northern Sikkim, close to the border with Tibet, which it was forbidden to cross into. Tibet was rarely visited by Europeans at that time, let alone European woman. Nevertheless Alexandra and Yongden did so twice, the result being expulsion from Sikkim in 1916.
